I can type EX for EXCUSED in the grade book but can't figure out how to enter MISSING unless I click on status and choose missing for the status.
Is there a shortcut?
I have tried typing "m" and "M" and "Missing" etc.... but haven't found one yet.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Sara,
Currently, it appears that there is not a short-cut for "Missing." Sludged through this discussion but at the end, "We recognize that the specifically requested "M" was not implemented. M, like EX, is not a standard symbol globally, so the feature was intentionally designed without it."

SHUCKS!
Thank you so much for your help. I've looked through a few different discussions but hadn't found anything yet. At least now I know.
Obviously decided by folks who don't actual teach - or at least don't teach high school.
Hello!
Having a shortcut for Missing grades, like typing in "M" would be great. Who cares if it is not universal, it is one of the status options in the gradebook, so it should have a shortcut like Excused "Ex".
Canvas Developers could at least add it to Settings>Feature Options.
This conversation chain is from 2018; certainly Canvas could have resolved this issue by now to make the product more user friendly. This is especially relevant in this time of Hybrid/Virtual learning.
Thanks!
oh! I am so frustrated with this too! I understand you can set it to automatically record as missing, but then I have to manually deselect it if I'm grading in class that day. I at 100+ clicks already today. Please can we have a simple keystroke?!
"shucks" does not do this justice. This entire platform seems completely neglected with no bug ever being fixed. This is a simple change that should NOT be difficult. We are losing hundreds of teacher hours because of stupid issues like this within Canvas. Why hasn't this been addressed for 3+ years????
This is not a solution. Do not mark this as a solution. This is offensive that it is marked as a solution. Please remove this as a solution. Canvas needs to add a shortcut for missing assignments to save teachers time.
Hello @mheimann ...
The above response you see marked as a "Solution" from @valentinesking was from August 22, 2018. At that time, the Canvas Community website was using a different platform host to display all the content including our questions, written Guides, video tutorials, etc. In the old platform, people were able to mark one (and only one) response as "Correct". When the Canvas Community transitioned to the platform you and I are using now (which transitioned late Summer 2020), responses that were marked as "Correct" now became a "Solution". One of the nice things about this, though, is that you can have multiple "Solutions" to a single question...something that wasn't possible in the old platform. Sometimes, I think of a "Solution" as a correct answer...or even as a slight "work around"...even if it's not the best or only way to accomplish something. It's *a* solution that may or may not work for someone's needs. The current links that Sky linked to are:
Canvas needs to add a shortcut for missing assignments to save teachers time.
If you feel that Instructure (the folks that make Canvas) should add this kind of functionality to Canvas, you might consider creating a Feature Idea here in the Community so that people can evaluate it to see if it is something they might also want.
I hope this will help a bit.
Have they added a shortcut for marking an assignment as missing yet?
I agree! It's very frustrating to have to go through several steps when just typing an M would work. Typing M works in Infinite Campus. I was surprised it didn't work when I tried it in Canvas.
/sigh
Forcing us to open the slide-tray for each assignment and manually click the "Missing" status radio button is a significant time-sink. Just give us "Mi" or "M" as a shortcut – like "Ex" is already a shortcut for a status.
An "Mi" or "M" shortcut in Canvas gradebook for missing assignments (similar to the "Ex" shortcut for excused assignments) would be a HUGE timesaver for me.
Canvas, over here being overpaid by school districts and yet refusing to make their platform user friendly with simple and highly requested features... Guess the developers are out on their yachts instead of improving their product...
Can you tell we are frustrated?!?
Oh, come ON. "M, like EX, is not a standard symbol globally, so the feature was intentionally designed without it." CLASSIC big tech avoidant response. "We are aware of the feature you all are asking for, but don't worry, we DESIGNED it that way."
Yeah, thanks, we know. Now change it. We need the shortcut. It is INCREDIBLY TIME CONSUMING not having it, so figure it out and don't pretend it's not possible. I've seen tech do some pretty amazing things...pretty sure you can sort out a shortcut for your end users. Thank you.
Yes, this is getting ridiculous. The fact that this frustrates nearly 100% of users and nothing is being done says a lot about Canvas. I will be voting for a new program in my leadership team when the contract is up. Looking forward to moving past Canvas.
Worked for me too! Excellent! Thanks for letting us know. And thanks, Canvas team for getting it done 🙂
It seems that MI works now!
Thank you canvas!
