Quite recently I have been having an issue of using the space bar. Sometimes it simply does not work in Canvas.
Then, I will backspace and delete what I wrote and it starts working again...but could just as easily stop.
This is not a problem with my keyboard (as you can see) and rebooting did not solve the problem.
It is a frustrating bug because the issue is intermittent.
I am using Chrome, so the issue may deal with the interaction between the browser and Canvas.
Thanks,
FC
Solved! Go to Solution.
Did the same issue persist when using a different browser?
It tends to happen after a cut and paste of text.
This never happened before, and I have always used Chrome.
Chrome is also one of the most common browsers and most secure. I would not want to give it up.

I'm having the same problem with the rich text editor--no ability to type a space. It's happened multiple times over the past few months and I'm stuck on it right now in setting up a new discussion topic. Using Chrome. I'll submit a ticket, but doubt that they can reproduce the issue or help with it. Any advice?
The problem keeps happening. It is obviously something they changed on their end.
They have not been helpful. They keep asking for a recording. My text description of what happens is adequate and complete. IT is not easy to keep capturing text while trying to do work, and if I did that might also present FERPA issues.
This is a MASSIVE problem.
I'm not an instructor though... I just found this from Google. Is this page only for instructors?

@jsward , please reply directly to the ticket to request an update.
I was just informing you of the ticket I had going.
I've already spoken with the support person and we're good to go.
I have been experiencing this for a while now and it just gets more irritating every time it happens...
BUT! For my sins, I used to be a web developer, so when I Google the issue, I Googled "TnyMice spacebar", because that's the name of the text editor I used to use. Not sure if that's what Canvas uses, but I figured it would spit out similar text editors in the same search.
Turns out it is very likely the embedded editor that is not working, not something Canvas - specifically - /did/ on the backend.
And it seems to be just in Chrome.
A workaround I read about was that when it starts to happen, type a period, then arrow back to before the period to type. I know that's a pain, but if it works, it would be easier than typing your text and going back to add spaces, which is what I've been doing. Crazy-making!
How exactly was this issue solved? Over a year later, I'm having the exact same issue with the space bar in Canvas. I keep clicking "see solution", but that appears to be an answer suggesting emails to the engineer.
I am having the same issue in Canvas of not being able to include a space. I have restarted the computer, and clearly it isn't an issue with my keyboard. I switched over to Safari and there is no space issue. Usually Canvas works better in Chrome, but not at this moment.
I'm having the same issue now.
just in case anyone wants to compare notes, it just happened to me again just now. It was in a nested list, but it was not from text that I had copied and pasted into the page. The page had come from a D2L migrated course.
clicking to HTML editor and clicking back to rich text didn't solve the problem, but removing the nested list did.
@356196 , if you haven't already, please submit the error to support and let them know the specifics. It seems the engineers are working on the problem now. You might even copy and paste the code into the ticket.
Yes, I just had this problem happen to me for the first time ever. Suddenly in the middle of editing a page in Pages, I can't make spaces anymore. Yes, I am making a bulleted list with two levels of indentation. The problem only happens in the Rich Content Editor, not in the main heading or anywhere else in Canvas, and not in HTML view.
I am having the same problem as well. Grrr. I do not see a solution in this stream.
I am doing an exam at this moment with 60+ students, who are typing answers in essay questions. Several students reported this very same problem to me. This is still not resolved.
I am having this issue as well. Have not had the issue before today. I use Chrome. I am in the middle of developing an in-progress course so I need resolution ASAP!!!!!
I found if I type a sentence, all the words ignore the spaces but I can go back and then add a space between words. Of course this is very cumbersome, not a solution, but an emergency fix. And after doing this, the space bar in Canvas started working for me now. I hope it resolved, but I am very skeptical this would fix it.
I think this problem is solved by the new rich content editor Canvas is rolling out right now: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-17764-canvas-release-new-rich-content-editor
I have found that if I put a period (or any non-space character) and then arrow left once so that my cursor is before the period, I can type normally. It's only when you're typing at the very end of a line that the problem exists.
Yes this started happening today in Chrome on a Mac. I have yet to see a fix save always having a period as the next character
I ended up typing it in a Google doc then copying and pasting it into
Canvas.

I have this issue. Rich Text Editor - Chrome - Windows 10. I find it happens in list items. I can edit the text in HTML just fine.
*UPDATE - I have checked this in the current RTE and the New RTE. It happens in both. Make sure you submit tickets!
Happened to me today. The bug persists.
I'm glad to have found this thread. I thought it was something physically wrong with my spacebar, but the problem was only occurring while using Chrome on my iMac. However, I had problems with images not showing up on Canvas when using Safari. Sounds like there's some bugs to be ironed out. Ironically, it's while I'm doing a discussion response on "Website functionality and design". Go figure.
I had the SPACE BAR ISSUE too...it was only when I did a Bullet point or numbered list. The FIX was to simply deactivate the list function in the content editor. I noticed that a little red triangle arrow appears on the list and bullet button in the editor, that little button and triangle was still on no matter where I went on the page....you have to click off that triangle and list function somehow and get it to disengage for the space bar function to return.
I am using a CHROME browser by the way.
I just had this problem.
Why is this still an issue?
Who is actually working on this? Anyone?
Everything time I see a reply about someone "working on" or "looking into an issue" it just seems to be a bunch of meaningless words wrapped up in some thin veil of professionalism to placate someone.
How does it take over a year and is your "fix" is the new Rich Content Editor I read about? Does this new editor even fix the space bar issue?
Canvas seems to be more concerned with the "make everything look nice" side of UX instead of actual functionality. It is extremely frustrating.
I will be glad when I no longer use it in future jobs.
I just experienced this issue while trying to type out an announcement in one of my courses. I have also had this issue happen in the past.
I started having this issue a month or so ago. I mostly saw it on lists in Discussion Boards: happening at the end of a bulleted line if there's a sub-bullet in the next line. If it's a sub-bullet line followed by another sub-bullet line, there is no issue. In the last week, it has also happened while editing a Page: I was typing on a Header 4, followed by a Paragraph. I am currently using Chrome Version 83.0.4103.116 on a Windows 10 PC, but experienced the same problem on another PC running Chrome. I just tried Microsoft Edge and did not experience the problem, but do not want to use that browser. I tried the Div of IT at my university, but they were not able to help resolve the problem in Chrome. Has anyone found an actual fix other than type a period at the end of the line and then type behind it? (That fix did work for me.) erinhallmark and @scottdennis : The person I spoke with at my university suggested I tag you to see if you had a response. Thank you in advance!
I am also having this issue
Apparently they never fixed the issues, because i am having it right now. With three days before classes start, this in uncool.
I experienced the space bar not working issue for the first time. In these posts I found the hint to add a period then backup to start typing again. This worked. It eventually caused me to suspect the issue was the editor was seeing some formats farther down the post that were confusing the input. In my case it was a fragment of a listed set of bullet points I was editing. After deleting everything at the bottom of the post the issue went away.
This may not solve all occurrences of this space bar issue but just check it in your editing screen.
I have this problem, also. The space bar works in all other apps, even on my browser, just not in the rich content editor in Canvas. I CAN use the space in the middle of text, just not at the end of a line. If I put a period, I can type normally in front of the period.
This is NOT solved. It just happened to me, over a year and a half later.
Yes, I'm using Chrome. But no, I was just typing - I had not pasted or made a bulleted list or anything fancy. I had just hit the [Enter] key for a new paragraph -- and my first space was impossible to make. It's a fairly new machine for me, so I thought it was at fault, and went to try in another tab, just randomly searching for it -- and the [Spacebar] worked, and brought me here.
At least I have the type-a-period-and-then-go-back-before-it "solution."
Please, don't we deserve a real fix? And PLEASE don't close questions that are still an acknowledged big problem -- UNLESS IT IS ACTUALLY FIXED!
Thanks for listening!
We are seeing this issue too. The problem has been known for more than a year, why isn't there a fix yet Canvas folks?
update as of 27 Feb 2021
the issue persists. the hack on putting a period and going back to type inside it WORKS. So far it's a minor inconvenience, but is annoying
I've had the same problem using Mozilla Firefox. The space bar doesn't work after copy and pasting some text into an announcement.
