Writing two versions of an exam and randomly assigning them.

If I write two versions of an exam, not using question banks and groups, just having V1 and V2, is it possible to randomly assign them to the class?    I can create a group and assign V1 to group 1, but is there another way? 

If I put a student in a group, does the student know they are in that group?   Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

As an instructor you may or may not have the permissions necessary to create sections in your course depending on the policy of your institution.  If you can do that, one option would be to randomly assign your students to two sections and then create two quizzes and assign them one-each to the two sections.  The students would only 'see' their assigned quizzes.

Hi Nancy,

Groups and Sections have different functionality.  For background, Groups were originally designed as an electronic equivalent of having your students break up into clumps of people working together in the corners of your classroom before coming back to a whole class discussion, etc.  You don't have students turn in work, take tests, etc in groups.  There can be group discussions but I don't believe they are graded even.

So if we want to give different versions of a quiz or exam, we would need to first create different sections? That seems really unwieldy for something that is easy giving a paper exam. If CANVAS can't do something as simple as this without moving a mountain, we should find a different LMS that can.
