how to enter test grades

I gave my class a test.  Now I want to post the grades.  The instructions seem to explain everything conceivable except this most obvious of questions.  Where is this most secret of secretes kept?

 @cronin ‌, I am assuming that this was an on-paper test (not administered through Canvas). If this is the case, you can create a no-submission assignment and call it Test (or whatever the test was called); this will create a column in the Gradebook, and you can then enter the test scores for the students directly into the Gradebook. If I have misunderstood, and you have in fact administered the test (which would be a quiz) in Canvas, you should already have a gradebook column for this test. If the test needs to be manually graded, you'd want to use the SpeedGrader to view the questions and enter scores. Please refer to How do I use SpeedGrader? and How do I enter and edit grades in SpeedGrader? 

Could you let us know if one of these scenarios corresponds with what you wish to accomplish?

So, the way to add a column in "grades" then s to create an "assignment".

Correct. Start by setting up the assignment and for the most part it will appear in the gradebook and other places throughout Canvas. More information is available here: How do i add columns directly into gradebook? 

The major documents that explain the gradebook mention that adding certain types of assignments will get them into the gradebook.

• What are Grades and the Gradebook? Says "Columns are automatically created in the Gradebook when you create and publish assignments, graded discussions, and graded quizzes and surveys. A column is also automatically added for the Attendance tool." Those who understand logic know that the truth of a statement does not mean the converse is automatically true.
• How do I use the Gradebook? Has a note that "Only graded assignments, graded discussions, graded quizzes, and graded surveys that have been published appear in the Gradebook."

I don't see where they explicitly say that you can't add them directly to the gradebook, which might lead to the confusion, even if someone had read the documentation. There has been a feature request to make that possible https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/5461-add-assignment-columns-directly-in-gradebook , but Canvas has replied and said they've tossed the idea around and don't currently have plans to implement that.

As another helpful hint, anything done on paper outside of Canvas should be added to the gradebook as an "assignment" (for the type). Assignment is the default for all regular assignments. Even if this is a quiz, don't add it as a quiz in Canvas unless you are giving the quiz in Canvas.
