How do I properly name my Canvas assignment groups for Aspen grade passback?

As an instructor, your institution may have integrated the Aspen Follett Student Information System (SIS) and Canvas. This integration allows Aspen to sync rostering data to Canvas. It also allows Canvas to pass course assignments and grades to your Aspen gradebook. Syncing grades from Canvas to Aspen is called Grade Passback, or GPB.

Before using GPB, you must ensure that your Canvas assignment group names match the grading categories in your Aspen gradebook. For example, if your Aspen gradebook has categories named Homework, Tests, Participation, and Written Response, your Canvas assignment groups must have the same names.

Notes:

  • If your Canvas assignment group names do not match your Aspen grading categories, GPB will fail.
  • In Aspen, grading categories must have a preselected default grade scale. Learn about setting up your Aspen gradebook, including adding grading category grade scales.
