I have an FFT account, and I am trying to import a course ( not mine) into a course I created. It looks like it is importing successfully, but then I go to my course, and nothing is copied. Help!
You have successfully started the import! It may take a little while to see changes in your course.
Hello @ShawnJensen2025 ...
EDIT: I just re-read your question, and I should also ask... are you trying to import a course from Canvas Commons? Or, are you importing a course that isn't yours but you have the file for it to import into your own FFT course? If you are trying to import a course from Commons, it may be over the 500 MB limit for FFT courses (as described below).
I am assuming that you are trying to import a file that you've exported from one course and then import that file into your FFT course. Am I correct in this assumption? If so, how large of a file is it that you are trying to import? FFT courses are limited to 500 MB of course storage space, and this cannot be changed. See this document for more details:
Canvas Free for Teacher Account Comparison | Instructure
If your file is over 500 MB, you're going to need to reduce the file size so that it can be imported. If you have a *.imscc file, you can change the file extension to a *.zip file. Then, unzip the file. You'll find a bunch of files and folders in the unzipped folder structure. If you can find a way to remove some of those files, you can then zip up the folders just like it was originally, and then change the file extension from *.zip to *.imscc. This is detailed a bit in: How do I export a Canvas course? - Instructure Community - 785.
Your other option would be to try and eliminate content in the original course first, export the course to an *.imscc file where it would hopfully be less than 500 MB, and then try to import that course export file to your FFT course.
I hope this will help a bit. Sing out if you have other questions/concerns.
Take care...be well.
Good morning-
Thank you for that detailed answer, I checked the course and the size of the course is 472.44 MB - IMS Common Cartridge File (.imscc)
This is under the 500 MB limit.
Hi there, @ShawnJensen2025 ...
Thank you for reporting back. In the FFT course where you are trying to import your *.imscc file, is that course completely empty? Or, do you have some content in there already? If it is completely empty, I'm not exactly sure what to tell you. The size of your file should upload to your FFT course without issue. Have you tried reaching out to Canvas Support to see if they have any other thoughts/suggestions for you?
Looking forward to hearing back from you on this.
Yes that course is completely empty. I just put in another help email as the vendor Cambridge acknowledges that two of their courses are too large for the FFT course. They broke it in Units 1-5 and Units 6-10, I now get an error message Canvas Common Cartridge Issues 1. there was an unexpected error, please contact support.
@ShawnJensen2025 ...
Sorry to read that you are still having some difficulties with this. Full disclosure, I haven't really separated out a *.imscc file in quite a while (maybe not since my last job as a Canvas admin at a different College?). It sounds like you've reached out to Canvas Support, so hopefully they will respond to you soon. Please keep us posted on what you find out from them. I would think that if the file was properly separated and then changed back to *.imscc files, they should upload to your course for you. Again, please keep us posted. Thank you.
