API Bad Gateway

We have built an integration to access your enrollments endpoint. The integration is running multiple calls and periodically we are getting a “502 Bad Gateway” response when you make some calls.

I cannot discern a pattern nor is this happening on a regular interval either. The integration could run for days and then run into this problem.

I checked to make sure I’m not running out of rate-limit tokens and I am not. This last failure I had all my rate-limit tokens when the bad gateway error came back.

From doing research I could not ascertain if this was on our side or yours and hoping you could help us out with some diagnosis.

@kari I am not a developer, and I don't work at Canvas, but my colleague and I built a Canvas integration (he did the dev work) that roughly 400 districts use, so he might be able to answer your question. I'll pass it along and let you know what he says. He might have a followup question or two.

A 502 is on the server side, so it's more than likely a Canvas issue.

I recently had a similar issue, and this is the only documentation or discussion I came across for this error using Canvas's API. I know it probably won't help you too much, @kari, but here's how I resolved my issue in case it helps others coming across this page:

I was using the API to retrieve all the New Quizzes in a course and then to delete them. This worked successfully until it suddenly didn't: My initial GET request for the first page of New Quizzes worked correctly; however, attempts to DELETE the resulting quizzes failed with a 502 Bad Gateway error. Like you, I also was not rate limited.

Visiting the course website and manually deleting the existing quizzes resolved my issue. Upon doing so, I could again successfully use the API to retrieve and delete any newly-created quizzes. I suspect that the quiz I was originally trying to delete had some bad data that the New Quiz deletion endpoint couldn't process correctly, but I don't know for certain.
