Custom Global Navigation Icons in Collapsed State Disappearing

We have custom links and icons in our global navigation sidebar. However they disappear from view when the sidebar is collapsed. Does anyone have any solution to creating custom links and icons that behave exactly as Instructure's when the global navigation is in either state?
