This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas
I have 200+ students enrolled in a course that I want to have fully designed and developed before publishing. I do not want to have to scramble around after the course is published to manually assign the students to their working groups. Even if it is super easy to drag and drop the names into the groups, I have a ton of work to do, and being able to do this work in advance would be a huge help.
Funny you posted this today! I just ran into this for the first time while supporting a canvas course built around our pre-major program. Instructors need to be able to set up groups prior to courses being published.
@scottdennis , not sure if this needs to go up for vote or not. Per the conversation at the end of this guide - How do I manually assign students to Groups? - "Assigning students to groups is actually a bug fix and is going to be updated shortly. This change will allow students to be added to groups in both published and unpublished courses. We'll let you know when that bug has been completed. Thank you! Erin"
Thank you to @taylorbs for submitting this idea, as well as, @buellj & @kona for your contributions. Your investment in this idea helped refine a feature which is now part of the Canvas!
