[Analytics] New (Admin) Analytics filter based on last name
When using Analytics (New) only 500 students can be displayed per term. Yes, the report can be downloaded, but then the interactivity is lost. Changing the sort also allows access to more/different students, but some remain inaccessible. Specific students can also be accessed by using the course filter, but then only the grade for this course appears. In larger, and/or open, districts, immediate access to student grades and courses is efficient and practical for all administrators. We are currently using the reports feature in all of our buildings, but the information is often updated throughout the day. The current information would be available on the fly using Analytics (New) if the student search (by name) filter was made available.
Example: A high school parent calls to learn why their student was not allowed to leave campus for lunch when Powerschool (nightly sync) says the grades are okay. The principal accesses Analytics (New), enters the sub-account, active term, and student's name. The principal then has immediate access to the student's course averages and can access the courses easily from this report. The only other way to access the information this fast is to give the admin "Act as" rights which is incredibly risky. This quick demonstration builds confidence and trust in the district.
Example 2: An elementary student's parent is questioning grades. The principal is able to quickly pull up the child's grades and access the courses to show the parent the story behind the grade. This access and demonstration is critical to the parent's understanding and confidence in the teacher, school system, and administrator. As we enter our second year using Canvas, this quick demonstration will pull valued parents into Canvas as well.
The information is already available under the Students tab of Analytics (New) as long as the student appears in the displayed list of only 500 students. Adding a filter to search by student (last) name would allow immediate admin access to any student at any time. School districts are businesses centered around student success. Being able to provide immediate, accurate and up to date information regarding any student at any time is crucial to the business of education. I can't imagine a district not benefitting from this feature.
