Currently, the Canvas Assignments page defaults to “Show by Date,” and while it may remember a user’s last selected view within the same browser or session, this behavior is not configurable. Instructors have no way to set a default view for their course, and students cannot explicitly choose and save their preferred default view.
This creates challenges for both students and instructors: Many instructors organize their assignments by type (e.g., Quizzes, Discussions, Projects), but students may not see that structure unless they manually switch the view. This can cause confusion for students, especially when assignments are organized by type or category (e.g., Quizzes, Projects, Discussions).
Without seeing this structure, students may:
- Misunderstand how their grade is calculated
- Struggle to prioritize tasks
- Miss the context or importance of different assignment types
Change the default assignment view from “Show by Date” to “Show by Type.” Other ideas to consider: Configurable default view settings for users
