When the Assignment Enhancement for Students is enabled, Canvas ignores the "Open in a New Tab" option for Assignments, resulting in the External Tool being displayed in an embedded window on the Assignment page. While some External Tools allow students to open the page in a new tab, others do not. In addition, some External Tools show unexpected behavior with this "preview", prompting students to sign in (even when authentication is normally handled via LTI).
Instead of displaying a windowed version of the assignment in the "Enhanced" view, if teachers enable the "open in a new tab", Canvas should display a button that students can click to open the assignment in a new tab. The remainder of the Assignment Enhancement could still be visible, allowing a parallel experience for non-External Tool-based assignments, but respect the teacher's desire to have students interact with the External Tool in a full tab/window. This would improve usability for students and allow a more full compatibility with External Tool providers.
