We currently utilize item banks not only for end of chapter tests, but also for core finals (like comprehensive exams per quarter). However, many of the questions we include for each chapter exam, we do NOT want available as a question/want to exclude from being pulled randomly in a core final.
To build a core final normally, I would do this:
- Create New Quiz test - Build > Item Banks > (select chapter) "All/Random" button
- Adjust to "Randomly Select Questions" > select number of questions to randomly pull per chapter
- (Repeat for all chapters utilized in the core/quarter)
However, in this process, there is no way to limit or exclude any of the questions from the item bank "group" now showing. If I want to exclude any questions, I either have to
- Select questions one-by-one and add them to the new customized comprehensive exam.
- However, I then lose the ability to control the order of the questions (can’t reorganize), there is now no pool to choose random questions from, and no grouping by chapter
- Create a new comprehensive item bank by painstakingly add questions one-by-one (approximately 150-200 questions per core x 4 cores).
- This option keeps questions randomized in the exam, and keeps questions within a “potential” pool to randomly draw from, but is VERY time consuming.
Unfortunately, using the "duplicate item bank" option does not allow copying all item bank questions into another item bank in order to COMPILE various banks. It only allows cloning the entire bank, as is, or adding questions one-by-one to a new bank with the "duplicate question" feature > add to existing bank.
Option 1: -- Temporarily Add Mass/Selected Questions (Only) to Any Tests from Any Bank
- Select New Quiz/Test > BUILD >> "Item Banks" icon > open/select Item Bank >
- Underneath "All/Random" icon, add new icon for "Select All/Some current item bank questions" with both a "select all" and "select for each question" checkboxes.
- This option would allow for adding only selected items to the Build Screen, while still grouped by item bank/chapter, the ability to still adjust "Randomly select questions" from only those selected, and point value - All without having to build any new item banks. This would also prevent duplicate questions from being created in other banks, and just be utilized in a different manner.
Option 2: -- Select/Specific Questions Added to New Bank
- Select New Quiz/Test > BUILD >> Item Banks icon > open/choose Item Bank >
- Underneath "All/Random" icon, add new icon for "select all/some current item bank questions" with select all/select individually box > new option to "duplicate item bank questions to [dropdown menu > ______ [existing Item bank]".
- This would more permanently create those unique comprehensive questions into a new item bank.
Option 3: -- Mass Duplicate/Compile All Item Bank Contents to Existing Bank
- Item Banks list/page >> "Duplicate Bank" icon >> New option to "Duplicate Bank [questions to another item bank] > [select existing bank]" -- To clarify, not duplicate the existing item bank as a copied bank, but duplicate all CONTENTS to another bank. This option would be fastest, but would still require going into the new compilation bank and deleting out the questions that are NOT wanted/should be excluded.
