Courses only have their own individual file content storage option. There is no central (organizational) content repository for files and assets to be used inside courses. Many solutions that seem simple to integrate (network drives, sharepoint, etc), have their own set of individualized issues when it comes to authentication or access across platforms (and/or version control and record keeping). Commons is not this.
Develop a simple content area to load files/documents/assets agnostic to any specific course. Allow linking to such documents in canvas courses based on permissions to the content area. Allow dynamic updating of such files. Track versioning and course associations on the item. This is similar to Blackboard Learn's Content Collection option.
