[Gradebook] Expanded criteria for 'message students who' feature and ability to export

Problem statement:

Within the 'message students who' feature, it would be useful to also be able to see students and message within the gradebook based on other metrics.

Proposed solution:

Additional metrics may include:
- Their total activity within the course e.g. more than/less than x hours.
- When they were last in the course e.g. more than/less than x days/weeks/months.

It would also be useful to be able to export this data as communication may be via another channel. It's not always prudent to message large subsets of students via this method given that each message is sent via and individual chat thread via the inbox tool from an individual user. A better, course-level record of who has been messaged via this feature may also be helpful. Particularly where multiple instructors are responsible for communicating with students within large courses.

It may also be a particularly beneficial feature to be able to combine these metrics. E.g. message students who: scored less than x% on quiz AND (have spent less than x hours in the course OR last activity in the course was more than x days ago).

Status changed to: Will Not Consider

Hi @JarrodHiles -

Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas with the Instructure Community. After reading and thinking about your thread, I am moving it to the Will Not Consider status because you have outlined three different ideas or feature requests.

  • Expanded options for Message Students Who... (which may fit well into New Analytics!)
  • Ability to export or document messages sent to students
  • Combined metrics for messaging (which also may fit better into New Analytics)

I encourage you to separate these ideas into their own thread. It makes it easier for the Community Team and the Product Team to evaluate ideas and to align them to themes. What are the guidelines for submitting a new idea?
