According to the article How do I apply a Missing Submission policy..., "The Missing Submission policy lets you automatically apply a grade for all missing submissions in the Gradebook. A submission is labeled missing when the due date has passed and it has not been submitted." While this works on some assignment types, it does not work on all assignment types - such as No Submission and External Tool assignment types.
As a teacher, I can't think of a situation where I would want some, but not all, of my assignments to receive zeros (or another designated score) when they are past due. By excluding certain assignment submission types from this policy, grades are inconsistent and a significant amount of time is spent manually entering zeros for assignments that don't automatically receive zeros after their due dates.
As more and more LTIs are being used with Canvas to create assignments using External Tools, I hope that Canvas will consider marking all assignment types as missing once their due dates have passed. As a teacher, I shy away from using these amazing tools because of how cumbersome the gradebook is to manage since it doesn't mark the assignments as missing when they are, in fact, missing. Finally, I would love to be able to use the Course Pacing feature in my classes since I have students starting at all different times. But because I have to manually mark many missing assignments as zeros, and because with Course Pacing the due dates are not the same for every student, that is not a possibility.
My proposed solution is that all assignments, regardless of submission type, be marked as missing once the due date has passed.
