We use automatic late penalties in the Gradebook at our institution to both ensure the consistent application of penalties, and to ensure adherence to our Assessment Procedures. However, academic staff on occasion wish to exercise discretion in lifting those late penalties when submissions are sufficiently close to the due time (eg: only 5 minutes late). This is currently a manual process for our staff in terms of lifting the late penalty for each student within that grace period. Shifting the due date/time 5 minutes into the future is also not an appropriate solution at our institution, as most assignments are due at 11:59pm, so shifting the due time forward pushes the assignment's due date onto the next day for students, and is liable to cause student confusion.
In the Gradebook's settings, alongside the automatic late penalties, include an option for a 'grace' period. This would allow academic staff to set the grace period (eg: 5 minutes) within which late penalties will not be automatically applied. This would allow: - Late penalties to be automated - Any grace period to be automated and applied consistently - Critically, it would allow the due date/time to be set on the day the assignment is due (and this would be reflected in the Canvas calendar), while allowing the grace period to follow through into the following day.
