[Gradebook Settings] "Grade Release Date" Option in Assignment Settings

Since the changes to the gradebook last year, it would be really beneficial to have an additional option when setting up assignment regarding overriding the grade posting policy.

Can we please have an additional button in the "Assign" section so that, regardless of whether the anonymous settings are enabled or not, staff can enter the date that grades will be posted. At the moment our lecturers need to set up assignments two different ways (depending on whether assignments are anonymous or not) to stop grades from being released early to students.

Allow teachers to schedule the posting of grades in addition to the manual and automatic that are currently available.

Reasoning: in most UK HEIs teachers have to mark and moderate all assessments before all students grades are released together. This is often a date 2-3 weeks after the assignment due date.  Teachers may be sick on the release date or forget due to other commitments.  This usually results in a flurry of "I can't see my grade" emails from students which is bad for students and time consuming for administrators to work out why and contact teachers to get the problem resolved.

@Stef_retired how many votes are needed for this to progress to moderation/development?

Hi, @claire_obrien , the Idea Conversations forum isn't designed to move ideas forward based on a vote or ratings threshold. Please read through How do idea conversations work in the Canvas Community? for more information.

Thanks @Stef_retired, so how does a new idea progress to development for some kind of tangible outcome for Canvas users in future? It is not clear to me from the link you provided how submitting this idea will have any input into future developments otherwise.

Update Grade Posting Policy to include a schedule for later for automatically posting.

Similar to "delayed posting" in announcements or "available from" in assignments, being able to set a date and time for marks to be posted automatically would be helpful.

The current grade posting policy allows for manual or automatic posting for all grades in a course. Teachers can also hide grades for an individual assignment and then manually post that grade when they are ready. Canvas should allow teachers to schedule when the grades for individual assignments will be posted and visible to students.

If grades are shown automatically when a quiz is submitted, for example, a student who submits early and does well can then advise other students still working on the exam which answers are correct. If the grades are hidden or muted, the student doesn't immediately know how well they did which solves this issue, but it requires the teacher to then manually release the grades for that quiz. We have a lot of quizzes and assignments and it would be much more convenient for teachers if they could schedule when a specific grade is posted or made visible to students.

👍 Yes please. This would stop a lot of calls from tutors into the service desk who can't clearly see how to setup grade release dates or when they've been set to.

This is a great idea. Good stuff Claire : )

This is a great idea. Can it include a time as well as we need to post grades outside of class hours and parents and students expect them.

The 'Post Date' feature in Turnitin is a feature we used in our last LMS. You could change the date and time for this as needed, or not set the Post Date at all.

If this suggestion proceeds, it would be good if this was supported as well in Canvas as part of implementing this 'grade release date' for those using non-Framework versions of the integration.
