[New Quizzes] Fix issue with New Quizzes automatically submitting student attempt if the due/availability date changes
Often, instructors need to change assignment due dates. With the classic quizzes, you could adjust due dates for an assignment as needed and the assignment would remain open for all students until the new due date, regardless of whether students had already started the assignment or not. With New Quizzes, if the instructor changes the due date after students have already started working on the assignment, the new due date will not take effect for these students. In other words, students with an attempt already in progress will have their attempts automatically submitted at the original due date. This means instructors currently have to go in and manually reopen the attempts for each of these students once the original due date has passed. For example: My students submit their lab reports via New Quizzes. Students begin working on the lab report during the lab, but sometimes we need to extend the due date for any number of reasons (school closure, illness, students need more time, etc).
Let's say the lab report in New Quizzes was originally due Monday at 11:55 pm, but the due date is extended to Wednesday at 11:55 pm. Since students have already begun working on their lab report in class, this work is viewed as "old attempt" and the new due date will not apply. Therefore, all the student's lab reports will automatically submit on Monday at 11:55 pm, not the newly assigned due date of Wednesday at 11:55 pm. This is frustrating for both the students and instructor, as students who are working on assignments at the time of the original due date will be suddenly locked out and unable to continue working on their assignment until the instructor goes in and manually re-opens the attempt, which must be done for every single student individually in the "Moderate Quiz" view.
In speaking with Canvas Support, they have confirmed that the current rule in New Quizzes is such that new due dates only apply to new attempts, not attempts already in progress. Therefore, the original due date "rules" will still apply to attempts that were begun before the due date change was made. As of now, there no way to select for the changes to apply to all attempts (both new and current).
My suggestion is that either: A) Update the New Quizzes such that any changes to due dates automatically apply to ALL attempts (as is the case in the Classic Quizzes) -OR- B) Update New Quizzes so that instructors are given the opportunity to choose to apply a new due date to "all attempts", "current attempts" or "new attempts" in the settings view.
