Hi, I'm a Spanish and Linguistics professor at Saint Louis University. I'm writing this idea because I noticed an error in the Spanish translation of the non-binary "they/them" pronouns in my Canvas course. As of now, the option we're given is "ellos/su", but this is not how it is in Spanish.
While there is no consensus as to which pronouns must be used (please do not reference RAE here, because they're not especially accepting of 'new' language rules), people generally use "elle/su" as the non-binary pronoun. I can see that Canvas wants to make students feel seen, but please, do not use English as the model for all languages. I would appreciate it if Canvas could update the Spanish translation and change the "they/them" translation from "ellos/su" to "elle/su" in Spanish.
