Any text entered in the rich text editor does not allow translation. This includes the student changing their language preferences as well as using the in-browser translation tools. I do understand that there are some cases in which this is necessary--I was told that there are foreign language teachers who need the text entered to remain untranslated so that their students can be assessed in the language they are being taught. However, that is such a niche percentage of Canvas LMS users! Considering the enormous number of students (and staff) whose first language is not English, and that we are required by law to provide these MLL students with tools to succeed in our English-speaking classrooms, it makes more sense to allow translation of the rich text editor entries. This makes learning more equitable for a much larger number of students.
My proposal is that the ability to translate rich text be a feature that can be toggled of in the course settings instead of being a blanket rule that won't allow it. This would give the language teachers who need to curb translation the ability to do so, but would empower the countless students who need the translation support to do their classwork without having to tediously copy/paste every word of content into a separate tab in the browser just to be able to participate in the course.
