Instructors and instructional designers experience unnecessary friction when trying to attach an existing rubric to a Canvas assignment. Unlike many of Canvas’s streamlined features, this process is unintuitive and cumbersome—particularly in courses with high enrollment or a long enrollment history, where the list of rubrics becomes difficult to navigate. Use Case: For example, in a high-enrollment course with multiple instructors and past semesters of development history, locating the correct rubric involves manually scrolling through a long, unsorted list of previously created rubrics. There is no filtering, search, or preview functionality to verify the rubric content before attachment. This leads to frequent errors, wasted time, and frustration.
Introduce a searchable, filterable rubric selection window with a preview option when attaching an existing rubric to an assignment. Filters could include course section, rubric title, creation date, or creator. A preview pane would allow users to verify rubric content before selecting it. Why This Matters: Improving this functionality will enhance instructional efficiency, reduce the likelihood of attaching incorrect rubrics, and align this feature with Canvas’s generally user-friendly design standards. This will particularly benefit users managing multiple large courses, such as instructional designers and faculty teaching gateway or core curriculum courses.
