[Speedgrader] Update SpeedGrader’s section filter so that selecting a section automatically replaces the current selection, unless “View All Sections"

Problem statement:

In cross-listed Canvas courses with multiple sections combined into one course shell, SpeedGrader’s section filter does not replace the current selection when switching sections; it adds the new section to the existing filter, showing both at the same time. While there is already an option to “View All Sections” for instructors who want to see multiple sections at once, instructors also need the ability to quickly view one section at a time without extra clicks. Currently, to switch from one section to another, instructors must first manually deselect the current section and then select the new one. This adds unnecessary steps and slows down grading, especially for teachers with many sections.

Proposed solution:

Update SpeedGrader’s section filter so that selecting a section automatically replaces the current selection, unless “View All Sections” is chosen. Two possible implementations: Default Behavior: Selecting a section replaces the current selection. User Preference Setting: Instructors can choose whether selecting a new section replaces the current one or adds it to the view. This ensures instructors who grade one section at a time can switch quickly without extra clicks, while still allowing others to view multiple sections at once when needed.

@lamb_lucy Thanks for sharing this. We hear you loud and clear!

For context SpeedGrader directly reflects the section filters you’ve applied in the Gradebook. So if you open SpeedGrader from the Gradebook and only have one section selected there, SpeedGrader will only show that section. The behavior you’re experiencing, where multiple sections appear simultaneously, is a result of how the filters are being carried over.

However, we understand that switching sections quickly is important! The multiple reloads is definitely something we'd like to avoid... We're working on a solution to make the experience quicker so hang tight and we'll have more information soon.

Thank you for the clarification, that helps! I understand now that SpeedGrader reflects the Gradebook filters.

The problem, though, is that once you leave the Gradebook and are working directly in SpeedGrader, it takes unnecessary extra clicks to switch sections. For instructors grading multiple cross-listed sections, that slows down their workflow.

I’m glad to hear your team is already working on a solution to make switching sections faster.
