If you're new to Canvas or simply looking to refine your skills, these five tips will help you maximize your use of the system and enhance your students' learning experience.

Tip 1: Modules as Homepage

I've found that using Modules as the homepage can transform your course organization and help your students navigate content seamlessly. Starting with Modules as the Home Page instead of a custom Page allows students and educators to get a better idea of how Canvas is supposed to be used. Too many teachers want to focus on creating a beautiful homepage with buttons and colors, but this sometimes can take away from the purpose and functionality of the Canvas platform when starting out.

Modules allow you to structure your course in a clear, linear fashion, making it easier for students to follow along and stay on track. By setting Modules as your homepage, you provide a consistent entry point for your course, which can improve the overall user experience for your students. This method ensures that students always know where to start and where to return for their course materials, reducing confusion and increasing engagement.

Additionally, you can customize the module view to highlight the most important content or upcoming assignments. This way, students are immediately directed to what matters most without having to sift through various sections. A well-organized module can act like a roadmap for your course, guiding students through the learning journey step by step.

To piggyback off the first tip, once you've set Modules as your homepage, you should begin creating and building course content within your Modules. Canvas's built-in Modules feature is designed to save you time while customizing your course structure. I love how you can easily add assignments, quizzes, discussions, and external links to your modules, creating a cohesive learning path for your students. This convenience and versatility make it simple to build and manage your course content, ensuring that all materials are organized and easily accessible.

Moreover, building content in modules allows you to chunk information into manageable sections. This approach is not only beneficial for student comprehension but also helps in keeping the course content organized. Each module can represent a unit, chapter, or week of content, making it easier for students to digest information and keep track of their progress. Plus, with the ability to add prerequisites and requirements to modules, you can ensure that students are mastering content in a structured and sequential manner.

Tip 3: The Easiest Assignment - Student Annotation

One of my favorite features is the Student Annotation assignment, which offers a fantastic way to integrate and repurpose your existing curriculum materials, like PDFs and Word documents, into Canvas. This assignment type allows students to interact directly with these documents by annotating—writing text, drawing, highlighting, and more. They can then submit their annotated versions right within Canvas.

This feature is incredibly useful for new teachers looking to streamline their workflow. Instead of creating new assignments from scratch, you can easily upload your existing curriculum worksheets and leverage Canvas's annotation tools. This not only saves time but also enables students to engage more deeply with the material. They can provide feedback, make notes, and demonstrate their understanding directly on the documents, leading to more interactive and meaningful learning experiences.

Simply click on the rubric sections, and SpeedGrader will automatically calculate the total score for you.

With rubrics, you can offer detailed feedback while minimizing the time spent on grading, allowing you to focus more on teaching and supporting your students. Hi @CanvasLMSQueen - thank you for these great new tips! Regarding the Module template idea...the gif moves so fast, I'm not sure what you're trying to show me. How do I create a module template from an existing module? I also did not see links to a knowledge article for the steps. Thanks!
