Can the app be downloaded onto the an Amazon Fire tablet? Or is there another way they can do their work on this type of tablet?
Solved! Go to Solution.
The Canvas Student app is available for iOS and Android devices. There may be a couple of extra steps you get you there, but I think that because Fire OS is an Android-Based system this may work. First, you'll have to install the Google Play Store app from the Amazon Appstore onto the Fire tablet. Then, from the Play Store, look for Canvas Student.
Let the Community know if this works!
@kkelly4 (hope I tagged the right one). While not an officially supported app, you can access Canvas on a Kindle Fire using the Silk browser that comes installed on the tablet. I hope that helps!
I just tried that on my Amazon Fire and I got an error message, "No eligible device for install". So, no, it does not install on Fire.
Seems like there is some demand for this, if anyone at Instructure is interested in looking into it.

I'm not able to select Google Play as a downloadable app on my Fire. It doesn't even show up as an option. Help?
You, in fact, cannot download Canvas app on Kindle Fire. There no additional steps (e.g., sideloading apps via APK) that allow one to download the app.
Hello, I am just now buying a Kindle Fire, and Amazon states that Google Play is not supported. From the comments, it seems that logging on to Canvas through the browser should work. This would be a bonus, but not a deal-breaker for me if I can't.
Google Play Store is unavailable on my Kindle Fire 11th generation. I also tried Silk Browser

Google Play doesn't even show up as an option to download. But you can BUY step by step Kindle directions for "how to install Google play store on Kindle." *groan*
I'm trying to install Canvas on my kindle so that I can read my homework on there and use an electronic note-taker (scanning pen device). Anyone have insight about that? Or an alternate way to take dissertation notes from electronic sources?
Hello, I have replied recently to this post, and since I just got my Kindle Fire 10, I found a workaround that allows me to download Canvas for Students to my Kindle Fire 10 Plus. I have Canvas on my Fire now and it works really well. If you don't mind going outside the box, How-To Geek has the perfect bypass for downloading the Google Play Store to your Kindle. The step-by-step instructions were easy enough for me to follow without making any mistakes. Here is their link: https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/
It is important to follow their instructions completely and pay attention to detail. The whole process is pretty quick. I would read it first, then go back and do it. On the "canvas on Fire" image I attached, just long-press the links that apply to your model and open it in another tab. When you have them all downloaded, they tell you the correct order to install each one. After you have restarted your Kindle, I would let it all update about an hour before charging in to finish up. If you encounter issues with Google, it just needs time to update. You may get the occasional dialogue box on Canvas saying the Silk browser isn't compatible, but I just x it out, and it doesn't give me any trouble. Totally worth having the Canvas app on my Fire. I have used How-To Geek many times before and they are trustworthy. If you find that you did something wrong, the worst-case scenario is you have to reset your Kindle to factory settings, so make sure you back up your stuff. Now I can download my favorite Google Play apps to my Kindle Fire. Good luck!
Hi gcoope15,
Thank you for letting me know how to download the Canvas app on my Fire Tablet. Everything worked out and now I can use it to look at my lectures on a bigger screen while doing my homework on the laptop.
