Hi,

I have a question about the quiz activity log. For an essay question, it will say something like the student answered this question 27 times. When I view each of these "answers," you can typically see the progression of how the student typed out the answer. For example, the first answer might be a word or two, the second another word, and so on. Am I correct that in a situation where you go from having nothing in the box, to a complete answer, with no record of the construction of the complete answer, that the student must have pasted the text into the box rather than typed it? I can't think of another explanation, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.  In general, how does canvas determine the separate "answers" for an essay question? Is it a pause in typing, for example? Thank you!

Thank you for contacting the Instructure Community. What you've described is pretty much how it works - Canvas will count answering a question if they go back to the quiz and choose another option, refresh the page, revisit the page, or if they are typing out long essay format questions like this it will "log" that they are answering it for a while. However, just because a student doesn't have a high amount of counts towards answering a manually types question like that does't necessarily mean they didn't type it - in all honesty it kind of depends. If it's paragraphs long - there should be some type of log for the amount of time they've spent on the question. If it's a few words or even a sentence or two it isn't uncommon for Canvas to log that as one time before the student moves on.
