That depends on what type of home page you chose.  If you chose the Modules as the home page, you can add the Assignments to the Module (or Modules):

If you are using Pages: Front Page, you can add the assignments to the Page:

If you are using the Syllabus as the home page, the Assignments will be added to the bottom section (Course Summary) as they are created:
