How do I split an assignment between two assignment categories? For example I have an assignment that will be graded on Problem Solving which is one assignment category and Writing.

Is there any way to do that within a single assignment or do I have to create two separate assignments, one with no submission where I record the grade for one of the categories?

The assignment categories you mention, @lbranen-ahumada, sound to me like a perfect use case for the Outcomes tool in Canvas. What you can do is create outcomes for Problem Solving and Writing and then use each of those as criteria for a Rubric that you attach to the assignments where students have an opportunity to demonstrate they know how to write and solve problems. You can even decide for each outcome-as-rubric criterion whether it counts toward the points for the assignment.
