Automatic fudge points being assigned

Sat down to grade a quiz today and noticed that for a handful of students (5 of 30 students or so) fudge points where automatically assigned. They were always small (+/- 0.5 points) but any points being assigned by Canvas is a no no and concerning. Have you experienced this and how did you fix it?

I've already reached out to Canvas chat support but got disconnected and wasn't able to resolve it. They suggested maybe "Set Default Score" was set but I didn't even know that was an option and nothing was set. More than anything, I'm just documenting the issue I saw here so that others may chime in with their thoughts.

Hi @batmaing, do you have a late penalty set in the gradebook? Back in 2020 we were experiencing these mysterious fudge points being added any time there was manual grading involved.  Our solution was just to notice it there and change it to 0 before saving.  If you don't have a late penalty then it must be a different issue.  That was for a classic quiz, are you using classic or new quizzes?

We have had the same exact situation; twice in just the past week. I had a professor outside my office just two minutes ago with this grading issue, and I just let him know that fudge points was changing the grade--he does not recall ever adding fudge points.

I do not have a solution for fixing this because I have not experienced it at my institution. In order to fix it, the situation would need to be reported directly to Canvas Support.

Something that would be interesting for researching what happened is using the gradebook history feature.

Do you see anything in the gradebook history logs?

Yes, I had this issue too! Not good to see -0.25 to -0.5 deducted from student exam scores that I didn't enter or approve.
