Hi. I am wondering about best practice for this issue. I can think of three ways to do this.
(a) Have one quiz. Assign students to groups and manipulate start and finish times.
(b) Have one quiz. Adjust student times after they have started the exam via the moderation facility.
(c) Duplicate the quiz and have a separate quiz for the late submitters with different finish times / durations.
None of these is perfect.
(a) creates lots of issues for running the exam. For example, if you needed to start the exam ten minutes late, you would have to quickly alter the start / finish times.
(b) Is relatively easy, except that the students who need more time will initially see an incorrect exam duration until the changes are made via the moderation facility. This may cause anxiety.
(c) Possibly the most watertight, but is complex and involves quite a lot of work for whoever is setting up the exam.
Any thoughts?
We set-up Differentiation Tags for these students in their classes so that it can be applied to multiple quizzes/assignments within the course. This would eliminate having to set it up each time since the tag only needs to be created one time: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Differentiation-Tags/Introducing-Differentiation-Tags-Personalizi...

Thanks for this. We do not currently have differentiation tags in our alpha environment. However, if we did use them, wouldn't it be similar to using "groups" (option a above). This would still lead to issues with exam administration, e.g. we would absolutely need to ensure that the exam starts on time.
I think if you have a group of student need to support, you can check How do I add accommodations for a student in New Q... - Instructure Community - 1092. This way can provide accommodations apply to all quizzes in a course for a student and only one accommodation can be set per student.
I hope this can give you an option to consider.
