Canvas Notifications for Upcoming Assignment Deadlines

Hi everyone,

Recently, we’ve been exploring early indicators that may reflect student success, and we found that students’ on-time assignment submission rate is a good signal. This aligns with our intuition, as students who submit assignments late or miss them altogether often lose points.

From my own experience as a student, I sometimes missed upcoming assignments simply because I was too busy to regularly check my Canvas courses.

I’m curious—has any institution implemented automated Canvas notifications for upcoming assignments, such as reminders 24 or 48 hours before the due date? From what I’ve seen, Canvas only sends notifications when due dates are changed, not when they are simply approaching.

To my knowledge, this doesn’t seem to be a widely implemented feature. If your institution has discussed this in the past but chose not to implement it, I’d also be very interested in hearing why. I’d love to learn more about your experiences or any workarounds you've explored. Thank you for your time!

Hello @JasmineQiuqiu - I went looking for a 3rd party LTI tool that could do what you describe and then recalled the mobile apps. Be sure to explore the Canvas Student app as such a feature is available. 😊

Hi @JasmineQiuqiu ...

In addition to the information you got from @Jeff_F, I was able to find an existing idea here in the Community that you may be interested in:

You might want to bookmark and/or follow this thread.  It was submitted seven years ago (almost to the day, actually), but the status is currently "Open".  Just know that the whole idea process (which includes voting) is undergoing some changes at the moment, and you can find more information within this blog posting: Turning Your Feedback into Better Prioritization a... - Instructure Community - 637959.

I hope this will help in some way.
