Changes to the Canvas Calendar??

Jump to solution

I don't see anything in the release notes, but there appears to have been a UI change to the event creation window in the Canvas calendar. Previously you could type start/end times into the event, but now the start/end times with drop-downs on the half hour. There is no way in this window to override the time so you are stuck choosing 8:00 am or 8:30 am, but cannot use a start time of 8:15am. The workaround is to click More Options, where you can use non-half-hour increments. But, that's an extra step and it's a pretty silly assumption that all events are going to start/end on the half hour. K12 bell schedules rarely ever align with those limited times. My staff are annoyed.

Looking at the current calendar guide, this first screenshot is presented, but in Canvas we see the second image.

@audra_agnelly Thanks for posting your question. Unfortunately, this change wasn't documented in the deploy notes because it was not supposed to be seen by you all for some time! This was our mistake and we're so sorry for the confusion and frustration it's caused. We understand this is a burden and have come up with a short-term fix that is available on beta now and will be deployed to production on September 14. The fix has five minute increments in the drop down selector to allow for more precise scheduling without clicking on "more options." We still plan to give back the ability to type a specific time and hope to reintroduce this in the near future.

This change is part of an effort to update and modernize calendar functionality, but we realize we fell short of that by releasing it too early. We appreciate your patience with us!

We have updated the 8.17 deploy notes (when this change was inadvertently released) to reflect the update. In addition, the update we're making to improve it has been documented in the 9.14 deploy notes.

Hi @audra_agnelly -

Thanks for sharing this inconsistency with the Community. The Community Team is looking into this, and we'll post an update as soon as we can.

This change is a problem for keyboard accessibility.

It also makes the Canvas UI elements for date scheduling in various tools even more inconsistent than they were before.  See the comments in [Files] Option to specify the visibility *time* when setting visibility dates for more information regarding consistency issues.
