Hi @GlennaWoodley,
You may or may not realize this, but you posted your question in the global community of Instructure product (like Canvas) users. The answer to your question is going to be very specific to your school/institution and possibly even your class. I'd advise you to contact the class teacher if you have contact info, or perhaps someone in the registration area at you school to ask about this. I don't believe Canvas has a "class has started" notification by default, but many teachers will post an announcement in the first few days of class, and you should at least see that, but it's not a 100% guarantee.
