Excluding one assignment from the late policy

I have a late policy applied to all my quizzes and assignments (they can turn it in up to a day late for 50% credit). However, I also have a "gateway" getting started/syllabus quiz. They have to earn full credit on this quiz in order to unlock the rest of the material. I do understand that a late policy applies to ALL assignments/quizzes in a course. However, a bunch of people getting half off because they were late with the syllabus quiz isn't workable. I want them to stay in the course and start on the material!
Currently I'm hovering over the grade book, overriding/excepting these late grades, but this is a bit time consuming and clunky. Any suggestions for a workaround?
