How can I add a few students as observers?

Hi  @painter  Welcome to the Canvas Community!

Many schools, mine included, restrict this permission for faculty. If it hasn't been restricted at your school, this guide will tell you how to add new users to a Canvas course How do I add users to a course? 

If this permission has been restricted, then you will need to contact your school's Canvas Admin/Support department for assistance.  I did find this Technical Support link for UAB on their Academic Technologies page.
