How do I create a file link in a page that opens in a new tab?

I created some html docs for my Canvas course. I added them into the Files. I am creating a page with an overview and links to the files. When you click on the link, it goes to the preview in the same tab. How do I make the preview of the file open in a new tab or just open the html in a new tab without the preview?

What kind of content is included in the HTML files that you are uploading to your "Files" area of your course?  Is there code in those HTML files that the Canvas RCE (Rich Content Editor) does not accept (based on the Canvas HTML Editor Allowlist document)?  Or, if the content in the HTML files is fairly simple, why not just create regular Canvas pages for each of your HTML files and then link to those content pages?  Just some things to think about ... not knowing the full scope of what you are trying to accomplish with your current HTML pages.

Thank you for responding. This is for a resources course for our majors. The files contain potential career paths they can consider. The html files weren't created with Canvas in mind, but I am trying to consolidate all of our resources in this one Canvas site. The files contain more complicated html and css code than Canvas allows in its html editor. It will work as is, it would just be lovely to allow students to open multiple links in new tabs so they can compare.

You could do this a couple of ways:

1. Highlight a link on your Canvas Page and enter CTRL+K. This opens the dialogue box below. You can revise the text title/link as need be and this will enable the new tab to open. Once you are happy with the info, you can click DONE.

2. When you enter the title of the document on a page, you can upload the file link as an external link and it will open in a new tab.

CTRL+K is one of my favourite shortcuts in Canvas, the same shortcut can be used in most other platforms to create a link.

Thank you! That worked, once I removed the "?wrap=1" at the end of the link.
