How do I quietly make updates?

I have an ongoing PD course that I periodically make updates to. I would like to be able to quietly make updates in the course without participants getting notifications each time something is changed. I have some who have completed the course, who don't need them but can use the course as a reference, and some of the changes are just in appearance and don't need a notification to go out. Currently, I am adding the elements from Design Plus to a few courses and don't want these announcements to go out at all. Since things have been submitted, I can't unpublish the course. If I unpublish the module they are in and have the menu items hidden, will that keep the announcements from going out?
Those in the class get annoyed when they get updates all the time, and I have a lot of updates to make. Thanks.
