How do you carry out deletion of student accounts from your Canvas? Because of GDPR regulations we cannot let data of students stay in Canvas after students have graduated
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi Irma we solved this problem by connecting the "deleted" status in our SIS import files to what is our "graduated" status in our SIS. That way when they are set as graduated they get automatically deleted out of Canvas. We do this in our user file.

Hi Joshua, thanks for commenting our question! What we have understood, using that "deleted" status does not delete user data right away. User data will be still available in canvas server 2 years and only after that it is deleted. As we have to follow GDPR, we should have mechanism to delete all user data totally when we want.
Our understanding is only way to delete totally user data at once is to contact canvas support and ask deletion. Anyone any comments to this?
I was wondering if you could give me a little more info on how you delete graduated students from Canvas. We use the OneRoster plugin to automatically sync Powerschool SIS to Canvas. When you are referring to "connecting the deleted status in our SIS import files to what is our graduated status in our SIS" how do you do that? Do you use an automated sync between your SIS or is it manual? Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. We are running into the problem where we are reusing email addresses of long ago graduated students for new students and because the graduated student is still in Canvas, it causes the new student to be linked to that old Canvas account sitting out there.
@jswartz Thanks for your quick answer! If we understood right, Canvas keeps the student data for 2 years and after that all data will be deleted form the servers. We would like to delete sooner (after 0,5 years of graduation).
