Is there a Way to Set Notifications for Discussion Post Resubmissions?

Hello,

I am reaching out to see if there is a way to get Canvas to send notifications for discussion posts that have been resubmitted. It used to be a thing in Canvas but it no longer happens.

So, for example, a students has submitted a reply to a discussion post, but they forgot to reply to a classmate. When I grade it in SpeedGrader, I give students a grade for their reply to the discussion post, and then ask them to reply to a classmate to earn the missing points for not replying to a peer.

In the past, Canvas would send a new grading notification for the submission of a reply; however, that is no longer taking place. So I am having to ask students to message me when they reply and update their post so I know to go back and edit their grade.

So, is there a way to get notifications in SpeedGrader turned back on for resubmission to a discussion post?

Hello,

Canvas does not send notifications for discussion post “resubmissions.” Notifications for discussions only apply to new posts and replies, and SpeedGrader does not generate a new submission notification if a student edits or adds to an existing reply.

In the past, some grading notifications were triggered by activity in discussions, but this behavior has changed. At present, there is no setting to turn those notifications back on for discussion resubmissions.

Workarounds:

  • Ask students to message you directly after they add the missing reply.

  • Manually subscribe to the discussion to receive updates on activity (though this will include all posts, not just resubmissions).
