Is there a way to show submissions from two assignments side-by-side?

I would like to have two assignments that are conceptually linked. In particular, I want students to respond to a prompt at the beginning of the semester, and then respond to the same prompt at the end of the semester. I'd like to be able to see their second response alongside their first response, so I can see how their thinking has evolved over the course of the semester. I have about 300 students, so if I have to do this with two windows that I manually have to sync between two SpeedGraders, that's going to be unworkable. Does anyone know if this is possible? We have some LTIs available, but we can't connect additional ones.

Besides the trouble of grading the 300 students, why is having two windows open with the two Speedgraders unworkable?

If you are sorting by name, it's just an extra click for each student (300 clicks in total are a lot, but a small fraction of the time taken grading 600 essays).
You could transform that into a single hotkey to go over both SpeedGraders, but that'd require something like AutoHotkey (perhaps taking advantage of the Canvas shortcut of pressing "j" to get to the next student).

If the issue is that you'd rather not have them sorted by name (which unfairly favors students earlier in the alphabet), that adds a few extra clicks/keystrokes, taking advantage of the URL formats, which should be similar to: /courses/COURSE_ID/gradebook/speed_grader?assignment_id=ASSIGNMENT_ID4&student_id=STUDENT_ID
So you'd open the two speedgraders, and then copy the student_ID from one to the other: double click on it to select, CTRL-C, double click on the ID on the other page, and CTRL-V.
That's quite a bit more work, but I'm not aware of an alternative without some scripting and custom HTML.

I tend to grade sorted by submission time, which is not going to sync up at all between two assignments, if they're not linked somehow. I can probably code up something to do a side-by-side as part of a tool I'm already developing (https://www.cs.umd.edu/~mmarsh/diptych/index.html), but that's going to take time I'm not sure I'll have for a while.
