[ARCHIVED] Is there any way to create custom fields for Users?

Some faculty would like to see what major a student is in.  Particularly, they would like to see that in the gradebook.  I have not see any way to create custom fields.  Has anyone else done such a thing?

Yes, there are custom user attributes: https://canvas.instructure.com/doc/api/users.html#method.custom_data.set_data

But you'd have to work out a way to display them. This can be done using JavaScript and hooking into the existing page display. Another solution would to build an LTI integration.

Or if you didn't want to create and populate them automatically, faculty could display the Notes field and note what they will.
