JMP file extension being misclassified by Canvas

JMP is a statistical software package (www.jmp.com) and in the past Canvas treated .jmp files as any other document (like .xlsx or .docx) and clicking would download the file, but now Canvas acts like .jmp data files are media (like audio or video) which makes Canvas try to display a preview of .jmp files instead of just downloading them. This confuses students and causes extra steps for them.

.jmp files should be treated in such a way to simply download when clicked.

Are you able to share a sample JMP file with us?

I am asking because maybe from a course/content design perspective there is a way to work around this.

If you are not able to able to share a sample JMP file with us, you would need to either report this to your school's/institution's Canvas team or directly to Canvas Support.

It won't let me upload a JMP file. It says:

The file type (.jmp) is not supported. Valid file types are: jpg, gif, png, heic, pdf, rtf, txt, doc, docx, pptx, xls, xlsx, xlsm, csv, mp4, mov, avi, wmv, mpg, mpeg.

Is there a way to get a .jmp file to you?

While I am willing to assist with JMP file types in Canvas, my preference would be to not create an account (even if for a demo).

Are you able to upload the JMP file to a cloud storage location (should as Google Drive) and share a link to the file in the Community?
