I use models as a means of instruction for various tasks for my students. I would like the gradebook to automatically mark the assignment I created as complete when the student checks the box Mark as done. Is there a way to make this happen? The students do not need to turn anything in online and I would not want to add an additional step for them if I can avoid it.

I'm happy to help answer this for you! So the way assignments are designed is it will require you to grade them after a student submits. Unfortunately, there is no way to mark it as done with the student checking a box. This can help explain grading as well https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-enter-and-edit-grades-in-the-Gradebook/...

I set up an assignment worth one point, for the student "marks as done". When I go to Speedgrader, and the gradebook, I don't see who has completed the assignment. Where can I see who did it so I can give points? I know there is a place that shows who completed it and who did not because I accidently found in last year, but can't find it now.
I have 133 veterinary medicine students who need to work through case reports. Within one course, there is an assignment to work through pages that contain text and quick check questions, and that are organized in a module. Students need to be tracked for completion. The "grade" is participation and completion of the cases in the module. The student reads, clicks quick check questions, moves to the next page (case), repeats, gets to the end and marks "done". How do I know who has done it or not? I do not want a student-by-student progress report for 133 adults. I want to look at the assignment column in the gradebook and see complete or incomplete. How can this be made to happen?
thanks, LKM
Hi @LeslieMcNeil,
For this type of activity, I'd recommend just adding a 1 point quiz a the end. The quiz can just have one true/false question something like "I confirm I did the work required for this module/assignment". Set True as the "correct" answer, and then Canvas will autograde everyone who marks true with the 1 point. I know some consider having this extra piece a bit clunky, but it works well in the end really, especially if you're using modules and just put the quiz as the last item of the module.

Thanks for the suggestion. That occurred to me, but it is such an inelegant solution for a system that has so much unrealized potential. The box is there for students to check. What is the point if it cannot be tracked? Happy St. Pat's!
Hi @LeslieMcNeil,
I think historically the "mark as done" was added to pages as a way for students of remove things from their own to-do lists. While I agree it would be nice if you could somehow have that tied to the gradebook, I think it would end up being a pretty significant change for Instructure to implement which is why I suggested the quiz option at least for now.. You or anyone else could certainly submit this suggestion to the ideas area for consideration as a future product enhancement.

I strongly disagree with this Leslie. While I appreciate the complexity of Canvas, grading is a fundamental component of what is touted as an enterprise university solution. The Canvas system allows assignment of a grade value to a "Complete/Incomplete" assignment. In addition, the Canvas system allows the student to mark themself as having completed the assignment. To expect the system to place the assigned value in the gradebook is more than "nice," it is a reasonable expectation. There is simply no effective way to passively allow a student to complete an assignment and then show that completion in the gradebook. That is a flaw in programming. It is the omission of an essential component. While chriscas' proposed "clunky" solution may be a somewhat effective workaround, my point is that as college professors we don't have time to try to figure out work arounds that should be included in the package. Thank for the link to submit ideas, as I will be doing so.
