Missing annotations in uploaded pdf and word documents

I am grading students' assignments in speedgrader, and have added comments directly in their word and pdf files. I have then uploaded the files back onto Canvas, but when the students opend the docs, they cannot access the annotations/the annotations seem to have disappeared.

Has anyone experienced this, or have any suggestions on how to proceed?
