How do i link a module to an image or a button on my homepage with the new rich context editor?

Hello there,  @keck_kristina  Welcome to the Canvas Community.  Thank you for posting your question.  I think you'd want to follow the instructions outlined in this Guide: How do I create hyperlinks to course content in the New Rich Content Editor as an instructor?.  You should be able to link to a specific module via an image or a button you've placed on your "Home" page of your course.

Hello,

I know this thread is from a few year ago but I too have a question about how to link something on the Home Page to a Module. I'm trying to link an image on my homepage (in the photo its the one called "Training Modules") to Module 1 of my training and it's not working. The other three images on the left are all "linked" - two to modules and one to a page. I looked at the URLs for each of them and tried to guess what the URL would be for the module I want to link to, tried clicking the "link" button and inserting the URL but it didn't work. I tried going into the HTML editor but then I got confused. Is there a trick?

How do I find the URL for a Module?

I saw another comment by someone a few years ago that suggested instead linking to the Introduction to Module 1 page. However, I have prerequisites that participants need to complete a few other modules before starting Module 1, so I don't think that would work. But I tried it anyway - clicking the "link" button and inserting the URL of the Introduction to Module 1 page but it still didn't link. Why isn't it working?

Hi @katieob ...

There are a couple things you might want to try.  I don't know if these would work, but it's worth a shot.

• Sometimes, you may find there is rogue HTML code on your page that really isn't doing anything at all.  I've had that experience myself where there is HTML code pointing to a website or other area of a course, but when you view the page like normal, there's really nothing there you can visually see (other than maybe an extra icon indicating a link).  So, you might want to try using a HTML cleaner site to remove any rogue HTML code.  I've written a blog about how you can use something like this:HTML Cleanup.
• Another thing you could try is to click on your "Training Modules" image, and see if there is an option to "Remove Link".  (You can also click on your image and then use the Rich Content Editor toolbar to remove the link.)  This might just take care of removing any of the possible rogue code so that you can re-create the link to that module.
• It's hard to tell because I don't know if those images have any white space around the colored boxes, but are those images on your page butting up right next to each other?  If so, you might want to include at least one space between each image.

Anyway...just throwing some ideas out there for you to check out.  Hope one or more of these suggestions might help in some way.

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me. I'm not great with HTML coding so I don't want to mess around with the coding too much (I can add padding to photos but can't seem to figure out this link business!).

Unfortunately, when I click on the image, my only option is "Image options", there is no option to "Remove link" - unlik the other three images to the left which are all linked properly.

As for spaces between images, I think it looks quite good as is and am just following the template spacing so I don't want to mess around with that 🙂

But if I do want to mess around with the coding but not screw up my home page, how do I copy the home page? Do I need to copy the whole course? I tried to do that but I couldn't figure out how.

Hi @katieob ...

Do you have a separate "sandbox" course that you could use?  If so, you could copy your page in your course to your "sandbox" course, and then try out messing with HTML code there ... so you are not screwing up anything in your actual course.  There are a couple ways that you could copy your page to a "sandbox" course (no need to copy the entire course):

I don't like messing with HTML much either.  But, I can tell you that using a site like a HTML cleaner (such as the one I've linked to above) isn't too complicated to use.  All it really involves is pasting in your HTML code from your page into the HTML cleaner site, hitting a button which cleans up the code, and then pasting the cleaned up code back into your page.  Like I mentioned in my earlier reply, it might be worth a shot.  Also, you could reach out to your school's local Canvas administrator or someone from your school's Online Learning department.  Chances are, there's probably someone there that knows a bit about HTML and might be able to help you identify what is going on in your course.
