Multiple Due Dates - Single Assignment

Question:

In my writing courses, students may request a 24-hour extension and those who request by 5:00 p.m. of the original due date receive a different due date (the next day, same 11:59 p.m. deadline). 

I used to then delete this block of "extension" students to eradicate the "Multiple Due Dates" subtitle under the assignment. Now when I delete this block it marks the students' assignment who were granted an extension as "Late".

So far, the only way to remedy this is leave the "Multiple Due Dates" or change the original Due date for "Everyone" to the 24 hours later date-- which is confusing to those who met the original deadline.

Any means to delete the "Multiple Due Date" block of students without them being marked as "Late" (because they are not, since they were approved an extension?).  Is this "Late" label "new"?

I appreciate any feedback; I would like to keep my extension policy without having to track students on paper.

I don't have answers to your specific question, but I'm wondering why you need to removed the extended due date?  I would think it best to leave it there as a documented reminder that for those particular students there was an extension applied. The only person who will see the "Multiple Due Dates" sub-title is you; all students will only see the due date that is relevant and applied to them.

So that I can distinguish between students who requested extensions versus those who merely had to submit a late assignment at a point/percentage loss. If I can leave it at "Late" for the late people, they can see that. People who legitimately asked for an extension also show as "Late" in Canvas/for their assignment.

As a solution, I have merely opened the assignment with an extension granted only to the students who requested them, for a 5-hour window the following day, then change to "Everyone" after the extension deadline has passed.

it works, but locks students out of viewing their feedback for that 5-hour window, but then again, any assignments marked "Late" are literally late, and it's easy to track at the end of the course (meeting deadlines is a percentage of their grade for extra credit).
