Non-submitted assignments are given grades by Canvas

I have an open-book, multiple choice assignment with unlimited attempts. Several students who have no submissions and some who have not even logged into the course (according to the People tab and the New Analytics) are being given grades of 100%.  Has anyone seen this?  What is going on here?

@vgorman1 It sounds like you have a missing submission setting of 100% (which I have never figured out why the default is 100 and not 0%). If you open your gradebook and click the little gear in the top right to access the gradebook settings, you will see a checkbox to turn on a late policy.  Personally, I like the late policy but I set it to 0% if they do not submit.

Many thanks.  Yes, I believe you are correct.  What I think happened is this.  The first assignment came in.  Then and only then I activated the default grade for missing assignments. AFTER activating it, I changed it to 0 (again, why is the default 100????). So the assignment that was already finished changed the missing assignments to 100, while an assignment due subsequently is coming in at 0. So I guess the moral is to change the default grade to 0 BEFORE you activate the function.
