Points Grading Scheme error message

I am getting the following error message when I try switch the grading scheme from percentage to points.

Range must be a valid number. Cannot have negative numbers or numbers that are greater than the upper points range. Fix the ranges and try clicking 'Save' again.

I have confirmed that the upper range for the A+ is the total points for the course. I did not enter any negative numbers. Has anyone gotten this feature to work?

Hi @lherdan,

Are you able to post a screenshot of the grade scheme page when that error comes up?  Maybe one of us here could spot the issue if we see it.  I have created some point-based scales already in testing, and have not run into any issues (yet).

How do I fix this?  Am converting to a point system this semester.  Looks like I may have to convert back?

Hi @MerylCope,

As I commented below in another reply, it appears that the point-based grade schemes are currently capped at 100 points.  If you have more points than that, you'd need to convert over to a percentage-based scheme instead of straight points (very similar, just have to do the math to convert the points into percentages).  if you need help with this, please let us know.

I have the same issue. I did some general testing and the highest score allowed in the first box is 100. I think this is a coding error as points vary from class to class. For example, my class has 400 points total.

Hi @DrRicka,

While I don't see it spelled out well in the guides right now, it does appear that 100 is the highest value for a points-based grading scheme.  I suspect it has to do with number rounding/precision, but don't know that for a fact.  From my understanding and testing, the points-based schemes do basically translate back to percentages behind the scenes, and I think they were indented to make it easier for teachers using low-point assignments to create a grade scale based on those points. Canvas pretty much always trats the final grade as a percentage and not raw points, so you could enter your grade scheme in terms of percentages instead of points.  If you need help with that translation, someone in the community here could probably help if you post your intended grade scale.

Is there any plan to lift the 100 points limit? I understand canvas uses percentages underneath but I'm using specifications grading and it is very confusing for the students to jump back and forth from the points based system to the percentage based system. Thank you for considering this feature.
