Problems caused by "Automatically apply grade for missing submissions"

Problem One:

The grade in Spreedgrader (zero) did not match the grade for the assignment in Grades (ungraded), and the total grade in Grades was based on the Speedgrader grade and not the Grades grade for the assignment, resulting in an incorrectly low total grade.

Problem Two:

In a published course, if an assignment was published with a due date in the past and then the due date was updated, students are assigned a 0. This means that there are assignments not due for weeks, but all students have a 0 for those assignments.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get Speedgrader to update the grade to ungraded or not yet turned in when:

• A student turns in a late assignment
• A faculty member changes the due date of an assignment?

This has been a big problem this semester for our faculty! I just want grades to be accurate and for students and faculty to have a good user experience!

A shorter description of this problem is:

The "Automatically apply grade for missing submissions" setting, in a few specific situations, is assigning students 0s when they should have a status of “ungraded” or “not yet submitted.”

In one weird instance, a student had a different grade for the assignment in Speedgrader from Grades even though the faculty had grades set to update automatically. The Speedgrader grade was the one calculated in the Total Grades. I'm not sure how widespread that particular issue is.

Students receiving 0s for late work continues to be an issue for us because it means students develop a sense that grades in Canvas are not accurate. 

I can think of two different changes that would help. If anyone has ideas on ways to make it workable without these changes, that would be appreciated.

Ideally, it would be great if a student submitting late work changed the 0 to an awaiting grading status.

Alternatively, if you could decide on a course level if the "Automatically apply grade for missing assignments" kicks in at the point the assignment is late or at the point the assignment can no longer be submitted, that would help this situation.
