[ARCHIVED] Quizzes/external Tool ?

I'm trying to understand quizzes, assignments, especially external tool ones. Looking at the county quiz (attached image), there is no "submission type" listed, and I can't see a link to the document. What might I be doing wrong?

Hello @laura_kovach ...

Quizzes do not have a "Submission Type" drop-down list where you can choose option such as "No Submission", "Online", "On Paper", or "External Tool".  Those options only apply to Assignments.  External Tools are third-party LTI applications that are typically installed by your school's local Canvas administrator.  The are installed at the Canvas account level (rather than the course level) so that all courses at your school can utilize the LTI integration inside of Canvas.  For example, some schools have installed the Google Apps and/or the Office 365 LTI integration to allow people to connect their Google or O365 accounts inside of Canvas.

This has been especially frustrating for me. For our exams we want to use an external tool which automatically grades our programming exams and submits the scores to Canvas. However, since only Assignments have the External Tool we have to make these assignments. However, since assignments don't have the Filter IP restriction and don't close access to the assignment when the due date occurs, students can take the exam at home rather than in the proctored classroom. (Assignments also don't benefit from the lockdown browser). Trying to work around these limitations consumes an inordinate amount of my time. I would like to either a) have external tool question in Quizzes, or b) have the same restriction options in assignments.

Here's my clunky workaround. I create module for the test and use a Canvas quiz as the first item. It's something simple like type your name, but I use it to use the access restrictions of Canvas (I use access codes rather than IP). I then add the external tool programming exam as the next item in the module. I require the module items to be completed in order. This way if they aren't in the proctored environment they cannot complete the Canvas quiz and the external assignment never opens.

@sgilbert You might check whether the external tool that you're using allows for IP restrictions.
